The Periodontists

 

Peter FloydPETER FLOYD, B.D.S., M.Sc., qualified at University College Hospital Dental School in 1966. He was resident dental house officer in Oral surgery during 1967 and then worked in general dental practice until returning to the Royal Dental Hospital to complete a Masters degree in Periodontology.

Since 1972 he has been in specialist practice limited to Periodontology and has always devoted a part of his week to teaching Periodontology, initially at undergraduate and postgraduate level, but since 1985 solely to Postgraduate students in Periodontology, for both M.Sc. and M.Clin Dent courses. He is on the examination board for the M. Clin Dent at Kings College London.

He has been widely published and is co-author of “A Clinical Guide to Periodontology” published by BDA Books ISBN 0904588807 and contributed several chapters to the book “A Clinical Guide to Implants in Dentistry” edited by R M Palmer, again published by BDA Books ISBN 090458867X. He was an early adopter of dental implants, beginning with the “Branemark” Nobel implant in 1985, and attended the first advanced surgical course held in Dublin in 1987.

In April 2005, Peter organised and delivered the first specialist level course in root surface coverage under the auspices of the British Society of Periodontology. He is a past president of the British society of Periodontology and held his presidential meeting at The Grand Hotel in Brighton on the subject of periodontal plastic surgery, periodontal regeneration and the relationship with plastic and microsurgery.

He has recently moved Periodontics UK to a stunning new premises at 30a Wimpole Street, and was joined by Monica Lee in July 2009 and Edward Sammut in October 2009.

 

Monica LeeMONICA LEE, BDS MFDS RCPS MSc MClinDent MRD RCS, joined the practice in 2009. She qualified as a dental surgeon in 1997 from the United Medical & Dental School of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and subsequently worked as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, whilst at the same time passing the Membership in Dental Surgery examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow). She worked in general dental practice on the South coast before practicing abroad for three years as a Civilian Dental Surgeon for the British Army in Germany.

Monica returned to the UK to specialise in Periodontology. She completed a four year specialist training programme at Guy’s Dental Hospital (King’s College London). She holds a Master of Science and Master in Clinical Dentistry with Merit in Periodontology and gained entry to the Specialist List of Periodontology after becoming a Member in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). 

As well as working as a specialist periodontist, Monica teaches undergraduate dental students at King’s College London and enjoys lecturing on her specialist subject to General Dental Practitioners. She has conducted research into possible links between systemic conditions and Periodontitis and has published and co-authored papers in leading dental journals.

Monica is also a council member on the board of the British Society of Periodontology and currently sits as their Commercial Liaison Officer.

 

Edward SammutDR EDWARD SAMMUT, BChD MSc MClinDent MFDS MRD RSCEd, qualified from the University of Malta Medical and Dental School in 2001, following which he undertook a two-year residency in Oral Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at St. Luke’s Hospital, Malta. Edward continued his professional development at the Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute, where his interest in Periodontology and Implant dentistry was founded. During this time he successfully completed his general professional training and obtained his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). Edward also undertook research which was published in the Journal of Dentistry and presented at the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) in Baltimore, US.

After an interlude in Malta, during which he taught at the Dental School and joined a prestigious practice, Edward returned to the UK and commenced the four year specialist training programme in Periodontology at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Dental Institute. He obtained his MSc and MClinDent in Periodontology, both with distinction. He also obtained the Membership in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and has been awarded his CCST for entry to the GDC specialist list in Periodontology. Edward has presented his research at the Pan European Festival of the IADR in London, and won the AstraTech Periodontology Award for the implant case presented for his specialist exams.

Edward has been appointed as a Postgraduate Clinical Teacher at KCL Guy’s campus, guiding students towards the MClinDent in Periodontology. He is a member of the British Society of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontology, the International Team for Implantology (ITI), the Dental Society of London, and the British Dental Association. He regularly attends both their local and international meetings.

Edward has recently joined Periodontics UK as a specialist in Periodontology.
