The Periodontists
His active research interests are periodontal reconstruction and regeneration, bone regeneration and rebuilding prior to osseointegration and the nature of the implant to tissue contact in humans. Peter has lectured widely nationally and internationally and is a past president of the British Society of Periodontology. He is co-author of “A Clinical Guide to Periodontology” published by BDA Books ISBN 0904588807 and contributed several chapters to the book “A Clinical Guide to Implants in Dentistry” edited by R M Palmer, again published by BDA Books ISBN 090458867X. In April 2005 Peter, Ian and Paul (see below) organised and delivered the first BSP sponsored specialist level course on the subject of root surface coverage by periodontal plastic surgery.
Ian is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings and has acted as a scientific consultant to both the European Federation of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology. He is on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research and Evidence-Based Dentistry. He is also an Editor with the Cochrane Oral Health Group.
In 1996 he started a part time MSc in Periodontology at UMDS (Guys Hospital), which he completed in 1998. He continued on to study the newly created Master of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontology) degree, achieving a distinction in July 2000. Around the same time he passed the Fellowship in Dental Surgery and Membership in Restorative Dentistry examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and he became one of the first dentists in the UK to gain a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training for Periodontology in at the end of 2000. Until recently he taught undergraduates at Kings College Dental School, he does, however, continue to teach in the Eastman Dental Institute Department of Continuing Professional Development. He is regularly invited to lecture on periodontics and implant dentistry to dentists around the country, including surgical master-classes for the British Society of Periodontology. He has had periodontology articles published both here and abroad. Paul has an active role in the British Society of Periodontology, having sat on the Council for the last three years. He also sits on the Special Advisory Committee for Restorative Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons.
